Why does the baby have black stool?

Patient's question:

The baby was born in the afternoon on the 21st. From the 21st to the morning of the 22nd, they had 5 bowel movements (black). But since then, they haven't had any urine output. What could be the reason for this?

Doctor's answer:

Newborn babies pass meconium, which is the first stool after birth. After passing meconium, their bowel movements will consist of breast milk or formula. It's normal for newborns to not have a bowel movement right after starting to drink milk, as their intake is initially small. Carefully observe if the baby's abdomen is swollen. If the child sleeps well and is in good spirits, there is no problem. However, if the child cries excessively and has a swollen abdomen, it indicates discomfort and it's necessary to take the child to a local pediatric hospital for a check-up.
