How to deal with pediatric strabismus and amblyopia?

Patient's question:

Female, 8 years old, the child says they can't see things far away clearly, and also can't see the blackboard clearly during class. They are very worried that this situation will worsen. How should we deal with pediatric strabismus and amblyopia?

Doctor's answer:

Exotropia requires surgical treatment. For amblyopia, glasses are used to correct vision, and amblyopia training is conducted. During the period of pupil dilation, near vision becomes unclear, and training has already begun after 3 weeks, based on stimulating the amblyopic eye. Daily fine motor skills training can be performed, or amblyopia treatment devices can be used. Training can be done at home, such as threading needles, picking up beans, reading, or using a smartphone. Exotropia will gradually worsen and ultimately require surgical treatment. Amblyopia increases the likelihood of complications, and once binocular visual function is impaired, surgery is necessary. First, treat the amblyopia; once binocular vision is balanced, surgery can be considered. Amblyopia training, the degree of strabismus is not visible, requiring a strabismus specialist to carefully examine the eye position, or using a synoptophore and prism for a thorough check until vision is normal.
