What should I do if my child's tonsillitis is not improving and they still have a fever?

Patient's question:

The child has tonsillitis with pus, has received intravenous drips, has taken the prescribed medication, has taken fever-reducing medicine, has used fever patches and fever suppositories, but the fever still hasn't subsided. Currently, the temperature is still 39.9°C. What should be done?

Doctor's answer:

When tonsillitis is purulent, the child will have frequent high fevers, and the temperature is difficult to return to normal. Only after the infection is suppressed will the fever subside, and this process typically requires at least three days. Additionally, the child is already 8 years old, and a single dose of fever-reducing suppository is a bit small. If the fever-reducing suppository has been used for more than two hours, fever-reducing medication can be taken, and the child should drink plenty of water, as sweating helps to lower the temperature. If the fever-reducing suppository has been used for less than two hours, physical cooling methods can be used.
Wiping the body with lukewarm water is an excellent method for cooling. The water temperature should be between 34–37°C, making it suitable for children of all ages.
