From Macmillan's abridged literary classics, SFLP carefully selected 40 books to form the "Easy Read Classics Series," with difficulty levels spanning Grades 3 to 8 of the "English Curriculum Standards." This series includes classic works by literary masters from the UK, the US, France, and other countries, featuring the works of renowned authors such as Shakespeare, Dickens, Mark Twain, Hardy, and Alexandre Dumas. To help middle school students better grasp the essence of the original works and the creative journeys of the authors, SFLP has specially annotated the language difficulties in the reading materials and included background introductions about the authors and their works. We sincerely hope that the "Easy Read Classics Series" will help improve the literary appreciation level of Chinese middle school students, cultivate their moral sentiments, enhance their English reading skills, and become the key to opening the door to reading English literary classics for middle school students.
Stevenson was a renowned prose writer, novelist, and poet of late 19th-century British literature, a prominent representative of the New Romanticism, and "Treasure Island" is his masterpiece. The story is captivating, covering navigation, pirates, adventure, mystery, conspiracy, horror, murder, fierce battles, and treasure hunting—all common elements of adventure novels. New Romantic writers paid great attention to the beauty and fluency of language, striving to elevate vocabulary to an extraordinary level, and Stevenson was no exception. The language in "Treasure Island" blends spoken and written styles, with clear and engaging prose that reads smoothly, perfectly complementing the story it tells. "Treasure Island" is one of Stevenson's most widely read and enduring works, with its plot originating from a map he drew. It has been translated into many languages and has been adapted into films multiple times. The story depicts the thrilling adventures of a brave, clever, and lively young boy, Jim Hawkins, who discovers a treasure map, outsmarts pirates, endures countless hardships, and finally finds the treasure, returning triumphantly.
