What truly earns my admiration are those bosses who work diligently whether or not they are present—those who can personally deliver a letter to Garcia. They quietly take the letter, without raising any foolish questions or carelessly tossing or losing it. Instead, they risk everything, even life itself, to ensure the letter reaches its destination and the task is completed successfully. Such employees are never fired and never need to strike for higher wages. The progress of human civilization lies in the long journey of seeking such talent. Such people, no matter what they seek, will always receive a warm welcome in every city, town, and village, as well as in every office, shop, and factory—Letter to Garcia
But I ask you, what are your strengths? Buried and covered in dust, yet still shining through the soil, it roars with its own power, regardless of whether you like it or not. Once you once considered it a flaw and tried to change it, you eventually discover that it has firmly rooted deep within your being—Second Letter: Treat Everything with Kindness
In reality, humans are always a distance away from happiness. Only by putting in your own effort can you gradually bridge these distances and attain that true happiness. When you achieve one crown, you will see the path ahead, the next crown, and the long distance between you and it. Life is like this—constantly moving forward, climbing higher, gradually becoming a better person—Third Letter: The Distance to Happiness
When Rockefeller was interviewed in his later years, a reporter asked him whether he felt proud of leaving his descendants such a vast fortune. Rockefeller’s answer was: “Ten times the wealth would not be as valuable as those three letters from Hill.” Hill’s three letters were later published worldwide under the titles Letter to Garcia, Treat Everything with Kindness, and The Distance to Happiness, deeply inspiring and motivating billions. In the second half of the 20th century, these three letters were the first to be published together in the United States, resulting in two versions: one titled Integrity, Kindness, and Tolerance, and the other The Three Books of Garcia. They once again swept the world.
In the 1990s, the New York Public Library and the University of Oxford separately selected the top 100 books of the century, and Integrity, Kindness, and Tolerance was listed on both lists.
In 2003, the book was revised and published again, marking the 218th edition in the United States—a feat unprecedented in the world of publishing! After the revision, the book retained the title Integrity, Kindness, and Tolerance, with the subtitle The Three Pillars of Modern Life. As soon as it was published, it became a sensation in Europe and America, quickly climbing the bestseller charts. It even competed with another bestseller of the time, The Maze Runner, for the top two spots on major bestseller lists, creating quite a buzz.
Although the book ultimately ranked second to The Maze Runner, the excitement it generated among readers was no less intense.
Our Chinese translation is based on the 2003 revised American edition. The translator, Li Jiaju, holds a Master’s degree in Economics and Management from National Taiwan University and later pursued an MBA in the United States. After receiving his degree, he founded the "Golden Finger Success Association" in New York and has used this book as the association’s long-term teaching material.
