I. Plot Summary
In the Northeast Songnen Plain after the Spring Festival of 1979, the land remains frozen under the cold. Snow falls intermittently with the biting north wind. The 400,000 young intellectuals in the Heilongjiang Production and Construction have begun to return to the cities in an orderly and large-scale manner according to national policies. In a short period, thousands of people migrate, leaving some farms and villages looking somewhat desolate. On the highways, cars filled with young people and their luggage pass by frequently. The train station is crowded, noisy, and bustling with people, their expressions varying—some lost, some anxious, a mix of pain and joy. The radio announces: Blizzard tonight.
