Features: Based on a systematic analysis of the main theories and practical experiences of SARD both domestically and internationally, this book is grounded in the forefront of international research and closely aligned with China's sustainable development goals. Considering China's vast territory, complex environment, and significant regional differences, it selects seven distinct types of areas—Southern Jiangsu's economically developed region, the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain and marginal mountainous areas, Northeast China's commodity grain production areas, the Loess Plateau's hilly and gully regions, Sichuan Basin's hilly and mountainous areas, and Xinjiang's oasis agricultural areas—for empirical investigations into sustainable agricultural and rural economic development. Employing theories and research methods from disciplines such as geography, economics, ecology, and sociology, the book analyzes and studies both the structural issues, market challenges, employment problems, rural labor migration, and potential solutions in current agricultural and rural development, as well as the interrelationships among regional natural conditions, socio-economic conditions, population quantity and quality, rural management, institutional conditions, and market development. From a theoretical perspective, it proposes an indicator system for evaluating sustainable agricultural and rural development, explores the mechanisms and pathways of sustainability, and proposes tailored models for sustainable agricultural and rural economic development in these different types of agricultural regions. In the end, it summarizes the basic model for national sustainable agricultural and rural economic development. The SARD theories and practical issues discussed in this book align with relevant content in the China Agenda 21, holding significant theoretical implications for deepening research on China's sustainable agricultural and rural development. The operational approaches proposed for implementing sustainable agricultural and rural development in this book also offer practical significance, reflecting decision-making frameworks for classifying and guiding sustainable development in different types of rural areas.
