He is primarily engaged in teaching and research on international political economy theory, geopolitical and political economy theory, geopolitical and political economy, political economy of development and transformation, political economy of transnational investment, regionalization in Asia-Pacific and China's political economy, and the international system of East Asia and China's social reconstruction. His representative works include: Modern Political Geography (Nankai University Press, 1993), Development in the Periphery: World-Systems and Southeast Asian Development (Shanghai People's Publishing House, 1997), and World-Systems Theory and China (Commercial Press, 2000).
