Features: This book is an academic monograph in the field of applied linguistics. The author systematically elaborates on the criteria for selecting teaching materials and the design philosophy from a theoretical perspective. It explores the standards for selecting materials for English-medium textbooks in English-speaking countries and, in line with the characteristics of English teaching in China, proposes that college English teaching in China should draw on foreign experiences while differing from the methods used by native English speakers. The data analysis collected in the book reveals that the English language skills of Chinese college students are only equivalent to those of junior high school students (aged 11-14) in English-speaking countries. However, in terms of interests, learning motivation, knowledge breadth, comprehension, and other comprehensive qualities, they far surpass their English-speaking counterparts. How to mobilize students' internal factors and fully unleash their subjective initiative, transforming passive learning into active learning, lies at the core of fundamental changes in English teaching materials and methods. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis, the book demonstrates the feasibility of such transformation.
