What is the reason for a baby sweating while sleeping?

Patient's question:

I always sweat at night, it started just a few days ago. My body is okay, especially my head, where I sweat so much that my hair is always wet. It quickly gets better.

Doctor's answer:

Sweating in children is a normal phenomenon because their sweat glands are relatively more developed, which is related to their active growth and development. Sweat gland secretion is controlled by the autonomic nervous system (vagus nerve). When asleep, the vagus nerve becomes excited, leading to increased sweating, usually more on the head and face. However, this condition typically subsides within one to two hours after falling asleep. This does not require treatment.
If sweating persists after sleep and is quite profuse, it could be due to calcium deficiency. In such cases, it is best to have a thorough check-up to determine if calcium deficiency is present. This would require calcium and vitamin D supplementation. Additionally, spending more time in the sun is the safest approach.
