Features: English departments at higher education institutions in China (including normal colleges and teacher education colleges) offer two courses for senior students: "History of British and American Literature" and "Selected Readings in British and American Literature." It is advisable to teach the "History of Literature" alongside the "Selected Readings" to avoid disjointed learning. Therefore, it is necessary to compile a textbook that combines both the history and selected readings of literature. This combined textbook is designed for use by senior students in English departments at higher education institutions. The historical section is briefly outlined in the book, while the author and work section includes: (1) detailed introductions to authors; (2) summaries of works (when the selected text is a fragment of a work); (3) key selected readings, with concise but thorough coverage; (4) annotations. In the classroom, teaching primarily focuses on the works, while the historical section is left to the instructor to guide students for reference. Combining the history and selected readings for teaching can achieve twice the result with half the effort, leading to better teaching outcomes. This is the purpose of compiling this book.
