Patient's question:
My son was found to have a condition where his eyes were turning outward at 4 months old. He was diagnosed with infantile spasms at the hospital. After being hospitalized, he developed additional symptoms such as nodding and shrugging his shoulders. MRI revealed some areas of hardening and a tumor in his heart. After a month of hospitalization, the condition was not controlled, and he is now on medication with daily relapses. What treatment methods are available?Doctor's answer:
Based on your description, your son's symptoms may be myoclonus. There are many factors or causes that can trigger myoclonus, including epilepsy (including infantile spasms), cerebellar ataxia, hypocalcemia, and some metabolic diseases. In infancy, transient myoclonus may occur due to the underdeveloped nervous system. Normal children may also experience myoclonus during sleep, which is not considered pathological.
