On June 1, 2003, the water level of the Yangtze River will rise by 50 to 60 meters compared to the original water level of 135 meters when the dam was filled. At that time, approximately 1,000 towns and cities within and outside the Three Gorges, about 400 kilometers upstream from the dam, will be submerged underwater, and nearly a million people will have to leave their homes. By 2009, when the dam is completed, the water level will reach 175 meters, and the phrase "High Gorges Yield to Flat Lakes" will come true, while many traditional Three Gorges towns along the river, rich in historical and cultural heritage, will no longer exist.
