Features: The invention and creation of writing is a significant leap in the history of human civilization. Because only through writing can the exchange, dissemination, continuation, and development of human civilization and other achievements of invention and creation become possible. This is a common point between China and the world. However, the ability to write to be an art—calligraphy—is a unique tradition of Chinese civilization. In the history of world art, no art can be as widely applied socially while also possessing the elegance of elite culture as Chinese calligraphy. Therefore, understanding calligraphy has become a necessary part of recognizing traditional Chinese civilization. In traditional artistic concepts, calligraphy, painting, and seals have long been regarded as a triad and mutually influential, sharing many similarities in form. Thus, the writing of this book includes seals and engraving as a whole; while regarding aspects like form and connoisseurship, which are already discussed similarly in the book Chinese Painting, they are not repeated here.
