How likely is the occurrence of Down syndrome?

Patient's question:

A colleague recently got pregnant. I heard that during prenatal screening, there is a need for Down syndrome screening, which requires amniocentesis for a thorough examination. I would like to consult about the probability of recurrence of Down syndrome.

Doctor's answer:

Down syndrome, also known as 21-trisomy syndrome, congenital idiocy, or Down syndrome, is a disease caused by chromosomal abnormalities (having an extra 21 chromosome). 60% of the affected fetuses are miscarried in the early stages of pregnancy. Survivors have significant intellectual disability, distinctive facial features, growth and development disorders, and a higher risk of deformities. If you are currently pregnant and the condition is stable, do not overworry. Pay attention to rest, enhance nutrition, eat more vitamin-rich foods, and try to maintain a balanced diet. It is recommended to have regular check-ups at the hospital during pregnancy. Generally, it is advised to have an NT ultrasound at 12 weeks, a Down syndrome screening at 16 weeks, and a 4D ultrasound at 24 weeks. If any issues are detected, timely treatment should be administered.
