Patient's question:
What is the function of magnesium sulfate? How to take it to achieve its effect? What is the function of magnesium sulfate? How to take it to achieve its effect?Doctor's answer:
Analysis of the Condition: Hello, magnesium ions in magnesium sulfate can inhibit the activity of the central nervous system, suppress the release of acetylcholine at the motor nerve-muscle junction, block the conduction at the neuromuscular junction, reduce or relieve muscle contraction, and simultaneously have a vasodilatory effect on smooth muscle, causing spastic peripheral blood vessels to dilate, lowering or reducing blood pressure. Therefore, it has a preventive and therapeutic effect on eclampsia and also inhibits the contraction of uterine smooth muscle, making it useful for treating preterm labor.Indications for Magnesium Sulfate: It can be used as an anticonvulsant. It is commonly used for pregnancy-induced hypertension, lowering blood pressure, treating preeclampsia and eclampsia, and also used for treating preterm labor.
Advice: Dosage and Administration:
1. For moderate to severe pregnancy-induced hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia, the initial dose is 2.5–4g. Dilute with 20ml of 25% glucose injection and administer slowly intravenously within 5 minutes. Subsequently, maintain the dose at 1–2g intravenously per hour. The total daily dose should not exceed 30g, and monitor knee tendon reflexes, respiratory rate, and urine output.
2. For treating preterm labor, the dosage and method are similar to those for pregnancy-induced hypertension. The initial loading dose is 4g. Dilute with 20ml of 25% glucose injection and administer slowly intravenously within 5 minutes. Subsequently, add 60ml of 25% magnesium sulfate injection to 1000ml of 5% glucose injection for intravenous infusion at a rate of 2g per hour until contractions cease, followed by oral administration of α-adrenergic receptor agonists for maintenance.
3. For treating pediatric convulsions with intramuscular or intravenous administration: 0.1–0.15g/kg per dose. Dilute with 5%–10% glucose injection to prepare a 1% solution for intravenous infusion or a 5% solution for slow intravenous injection. A 25% solution can be used for deep intramuscular injection. Generally, pediatric patients are only given intramuscular or intravenous administration, which is safe.
