However, the major counterfeiting case that occurred in China at the beginning of the 20th century, despite nearly a century of vicissitudes, remains little-known. This book, compiled with long-accumulated detailed materials and presented in a vivid documentary style, reveals for the first time this counterfeiting case that took place during the Republican era: On the night of September 24, 1924, the Shenyang Dongbei Sanlun Official Silver Bureau, under Zhang Zuolin's control, discovered counterfeit one-hundred-yuan notes. The circulation and investigation of the counterfeit money quickly stirred a great uproar in the Dongbei provinces and the Beijing-Tianjin region. Zhang Zuolin, untangling the complex web of clues, eventually traced the issue all the way to the Zhili warlord Cao Kun. This led to new and old feuds and covert struggles between the Zhili and Fengtian warlord factions, thereby exposing the vile dealings and astonishing secrets at all levels of politics, finance, diplomacy, the military, and society during the Republican era.
