What is Bell's palsy?

Patient's question:

What is Bell's palsy? I've never heard of this condition before. What could have caused this? My friend has this strange illness. In his case, how should it be treated? Or can he fully recover to his former self?

Doctor's answer:

Bell's palsy, also known as facial neuritis or facial paralysis in clinical diagnosis, is primarily caused by viral infections leading to facial paralysis. It manifests as the inability to perform facial muscle movements, disappearance of forehead wrinkles, difficulty closing the eyes, and drooling. In the acute phase of treatment, intravenous administration of corticosteroids and B-complex vitamins are first administered to nourish the nerves. At the same time, traditional Chinese acupuncture is used to stimulate the nerves for complete recovery, along with post-treatment rehabilitation exercises. Most patients can fully recover to their previous condition. However, if the condition is severe, complications may persist.
