Augustine's Confessions

Author: Augustine

Features: Augustine affirmed the doctrine of "original sin," believing that Adam and Eve violated God's will, abused their freedom, and were thus deprived of freedom by God, leading to the eternal lack of freedom for humanity. At the same time, he also believed that everything in human life was predetermined by God and entirely subject to His will. Human happiness was granted by God. Therefore, if people prayed devoutly to God, He would bless them. In other words, his belief was that only by believing in and relying on God could people attain true happiness. The Roman Empire finally abandoned its polytheism since its founding and established Christianity as the state religion. Augustine spent thirteen years writing an extensive work titled The City of God.
