Features: Zhang Taiyan was not only a renowned philosopher of modern China and a master of national studies, but also an important democratic revolutionary and thinker, as well as a pioneer of Chinese sociology in modern times. He actively engaged in the dissemination of democratic ideas and the struggle against the imperial system throughout his life. In his early years, he advocated for the reform and self-strengthening movement, later accepting Sun Yat-sen's democratic revolutionary platform, refuting Kang Youwei's of opposing revolution by preserving the monarchy and reforming through ancient traditions. He vigorously promoted and even personally participated in the democratic revolution. In academic research, he explored a wide range of fields, including philosophy, history, and classical studies, making him a pioneer and trailblazer of modern Chinese academia. Many of his academic ideas profoundly influenced the May Fourth New Culture Movement.
From the perspective of his external life experiences, Zhang Taiyan focused on politics in the early stages of his life and emphasized academia in the later stages, yet he was deeply committed to bridging politics and scholarship. Mr. Lu Xun once said, "Examining his life, no one else wore a large medal as a shoulder ornament, openly cursed Yuan Shikai's hidden malevolent intentions in front of the presidential palace, and no one else was pursued seven times and imprisoned three times while remaining unyielding in their revolutionary aspirations. This was the spirit of the ancient sages and the model for the younger generation." In the history of modern Chinese academia, he was also an academic giant who established his own school of thought. His scholarship was rooted in the Qian-Jia Han studies but also integrated various new ideas from abroad, "applying new knowledge to enrich old studies," thus breaking through the boundaries of the Qing dynasty and forming his own system. He also proposed the plan to compile A General History of the Chinese Nation, aiming to narrate social evolution and guide future generations. His works such as Revising Confucius and The Qing Scholars not only summarized the evolution of Qing-era education but also proposed numerous innovative insights into the history of Chinese academia and institutional history. Meanwhile, his articles promoting democratic revolutionary ideas more strongly resonated with the pulse of early 20th-century China.
The Essential Writings of Zhang Taiyan we have compiled is a selection from his entire body of work, with a focus on history and philosophy. It can serve as a mirror for reflection on life for a broad readership, particularly for young students.
