The younger the age of treatment for amblyopia, the better the effect. Treatment can begin as early as 1-2 years old. Amblyopia before the age of 6 is often easily treated to 1.0 or better. For the aforementioned refractory amblyopia, if treatment is not started until after the age of 6, it is very difficult to achieve 1.0 or better. Amblyopia above the age of 12 is generally considered to be largely ineffective.
