Features: The Annual China Essay Rankings were initiated in 1998, when Essays underwent a major overhaul, or what could be called a reform. The essay community held high hopes for Essays, expecting it to become a trendsetter or information hub for the development of Chinese essays. To summarize the state of Chinese essay creation annually, Essays consulted relevant experts and decided to invite influential writers, critics, and editors to form the China Essay Rankings Selection Committee. This committee would select essays published publicly in newspapers and magazines across the country. Essays then assigned dedicated staff to rank the selected works and publish the rankings. The criteria for the rankings generally included: essays that demonstrated personal strength, life value, and intellectual brilliance; those that were sincere, vivid, philosophical, and humorous, reflecting humanistic spirit; those that delicately portrayed life scenes and conveyed psychological journeys; those that were fresh, pure, and elegant; and those that showed creative and innovative approaches in expression and language use. This volume includes essays such as "One Hundred Years of Youth," "About Friendship," "Sleep in Tibet," "Old Xi'an," and "Entering New York."
