Features: She is a mysterious writer who excels at transforming life into art and is filled with almost romantic tragic emotions. She is from an aristocratic family, but she takes pride in being self-reliant. She feels deep empathy for others but can always see the pitiable and amusing aspects of the common people at every moment. She can enjoy the bustling attention of the crowd as well as the loneliness of being alone. This alone is enough to make her a tragic legend.
Emerson's writing life was long. However, in his later years, he experienced the suffering of the American Civil War. Shortly after the war ended, his memory gradually deteriorated, and his thoughts could no longer be focused. He passed away in 1882, leaving behind many important unfinished works, which were published gradually after being compiled. The renowned British writer Matthew Arnold once said: "In the 19th century, no prose had a greater influence than Emerson's." The essays in this book are selected from the Emerson collection edited by Mark Van Doren. They are divided into five chapters: "Plans," "Lifestyle," "Poetry," "Characters," and "Letters," with an excerpted "Editor's Note" at the beginning of each chapter to provide an introduction.
