Features: The Caine Mutiny is a play depicting a debate in a U.S. military court, with almost no action or conflicts, minimal stage direction, and even no female characters. It relies entirely on actors sitting on stage to deliver monologues and explanations to advance the plot. The dialogue is filled with legal knowledge, nautical knowledge, and psychological knowledge, making it seem quite dull at first glance. At the time, I had doubts about whether this internationally acclaimed play, which had stunned Europe and America, could be accepted by Chinese audiences. Seeing my father's eager yet reluctant demeanor, I remained unconvinced. My suggestion was to choose a different play. If you don’t listen, we won’t stop you. If it doesn’t work out, don’t be upset—just consider it a contribution to cultural exchange between China and the world. After careful consideration, my father ultimately decided to take on the translation. In 1988, the Chinese version of The Caine Mutiny was finally staged. The performance was a resounding success, and the public response far exceeded my expectations. The grandeur of the production remains vivid in my memory to this day. The brilliant dialogue had the audience completely captivated, and the play broke the 100-show mark, leading to the industry saying: "After seeing The Caine Mutiny, you’ll understand why theater is called theater!" I had to admire my father’s foresight—he was truly visionary, always at the forefront of his time.
