Features: To the implementation of the "College English Teaching Syllabus"; to adapt to the higher requirements of society for college English teaching; Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press solemnly launched the "College English" series textbooks at the beginning of the new century, making another contribution to promoting college English teaching in China. A crystallization of collective wisdom: The entire series of textbooks was co-authored by senior professors and English teaching experts from renowned institutions such as Fudan University, Peking University, East China Normal University, University of Science and Technology of China, South China University of Technology, Nanjing University, Wuhan University, Nankai University, Renmin University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Southeast University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Soochow University. Comprehensive and reasonable course combination: The series textbooks consist of four types of textbooks—Comprehensive, Listening and Speaking, Reading, and Fast Reading—as well as a Grammar Handbook. In addition, preparatory-level textbooks for the first four types of textbooks are available for students with lower starting levels. Each textbook corresponds to one another, forming an organic whole. Balancing language proficiency and comprehensive application ability training: The series textbooks take the "Comprehensive Textbook" as the core. Each unit revolves around a theme reflecting contemporary life, supplemented by the "Listening and Speaking Textbook," "Reading Textbook," and "Fast Reading Textbook," guiding students to deeply and comprehensively acquire and master language and cultural knowledge related to each theme, as well as rich language materials, and providing sufficient training in language comprehensive application skills for the practical theme. A dual-winning strategy of quality cultivation and successful exam preparation: Each textbook includes a certain number of exercises similar to the types found in CET exams. The "Comprehensive Textbook" also features "Test Yourself" designed in the form of a CET exam paper, allowing students to familiarize themselves with the format and requirements of the CET exam while learning language knowledge and training language application skills, achieving the goal of balancing quality cultivation and exam preparation. The "College English" series textbooks is a novel, multi-dimensional supplementary textbook composed of books, audiovisual materials, CDs, and online resources. Since their release in 2001, they have been widely welcomed and praised by schools in use. Due to their comprehensive alignment with the basic requirements for college foreign language teaching proposed by the Ministry of Education, the series has been selected as the "National Planning Textbook for General Higher Education 'Five-Year Plan'" and the "Ministry of Education Recommended Textbook for College Foreign Language Teaching." The series includes one volume each of "Comprehensive Textbook," "Listening and Speaking Textbook," "Reading Textbook," "Fast Reading Textbook" (from 1 to 6), and one "Grammar Handbook." Due to the vast territory of China, the teaching resources, faculty, and student conditions vary across regions and institutions. Therefore, it is necessary to implement classified guidance and tiered teaching. To maximize the satisfaction of students with different levels, levels, and learning objectives, we have specifically organized and planned the preparatory-level textbooks for this series, which include one volume each of the "Comprehensive Textbook" and "Listening and Speaking Textbook," written by British experts familiar with college English teaching in China. This textbook is strictly compiled according to the actual needs of college English teaching in China, with a difficulty level lower than the first level of "College English" but reasonably connected to it. Each unit of this textbook is organized thematically, enabling students to comprehensively and deeply master rich language knowledge, acquire cultural information, and develop their comprehensive application skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. The after-class exercises are designed to be diverse, targeted, engaging, and challenging. In terms of material selection, emphasis is placed on the comparison of Chinese and Western cultures to cultivate students' cultural literacy and awaken their local and cross-cultural awareness.
