Features: This is a textbook on news theory, primarily intended for undergraduate students in journalism. It can also serve as a reference for graduate students in journalism, communication, and related fields, as well as for researchers and practitioners in the field of news and communication. The existing structure of the book is designed with the following considerations in mind:
An extensive introduction aims to provide readers with a macro understanding and grasp of the development of theoretical journalism. Chapter 1 describes the historical evolution of news and communication in a broad, strokes, to give readers a preliminary overview of the overall process. Chapter 2 focuses on the contemporary era, analyzing the construction of the atmosphere surrounding news and communication from multiple perspectives, establishing a "starting point" for discussing the specific communication process. From Chapters 3 to 8, the book offers in-depth and detailed discussions on the senders and receivers of news communication, the content of news communication, the principles and methods of communication, the media of news communication, and the reception of news.
Chapter 9 provides a high-level perspective on the entire news communication process, offering an overview and summary. Chapters 10 to 14 discuss the main theoretical issues of the news communication industry. The reason for placing industry theory in this position is that, in my view, the essence of the news communication industry lies in the operation of the news communication process. Only by first grasping the logic of the news communication process can we better understand the news communication industry and its relationship with the larger social system.
Chapter 15 reminds readers that the cognitive approach to news and social reality is merely one way for humans to understand the world. Those who study, practice, or consume news must fully recognize that news, in essence, simplifies the world. We should strive to understand and experience the world from a broader perspective.
