Features: Czerny Piano Exercises Op. 748, also known as Little Hands Exercises. These are primarily written for young children whose fingers have not yet developed enough to stretch an octave. Many such children have small hands but have reached an intermediate level of piano proficiency. To develop their small-hand techniques, Czerny composed this collection of exercises. Currently, numerous children in China studying piano find this exemplary exercise collection extremely helpful. After completing the initial piano training phase, children who have acquired basic note-reading skills and playing techniques enter the intermediate skill stage focused on training finger agility and smooth running. Little Hands Exercises is perfectly suited for this stage, with a difficulty level similar to Czerny's Op. 849. The main training objectives and requirements for each exercise are as follows:
First Exercise: Focuses on training the independence, balance, and fluency of the right-hand five fingers. After mastering it, play at a medium-fast tempo. The sound should be bright and clear, thumb shifts should be flexible, scales should flow smoothly both up and down, and the sustained bass notes in the left hand should be held for their full value. The ending should emphasize right-hand double-note wrist-stopping techniques and the correct performance of staccato, legato, and various expressive markings.
Second Exercise: A lively little allegro. Mainly trains right-hand triad double-note playing techniques and the sensitive touch of the five fingers. When playing, pay attention to the independence and balance of finger movements, the flexibility and elasticity of the wrist, and the natural fluency of thumb shifts. The phrasing of characteristic patterns should be clear; the left-hand sustained notes should maintain a correct 3/4 rhythm to create a supportive accompaniment effect. The middle section, starting with a soft, connected singing melody, should contrast with the beginning. Focus on the correct coordination of both hands.
Third Exercise: Uses fast, triple-timed scales to train the five fingers. Requires flexible finger movements, smooth and flowing sounds, and even thumb shifts. Phrasing should be clear. For adjacent ties and separated notes, master the wrist elasticity technique during the lifting and pressing of the keys.
Fourth Exercise: A singing-like andante. Practices right-hand melodic lines with ornamentation. Requires arm-weighted, soft key pressing. The wrist should be soft and elastic, with stable fingertips. The wrist's center of gravity should follow the direction of the melodic notes, allowing the music to flow naturally. During playing, pay attention to the correct timing of dotted sixteenth notes and various ornamentation techniques, as well as the contrast between soft and loud dynamics.
Fifth Exercise: Through repeated patterns of the same motif, trains the five fingers' quick and nimble techniques while practicing grace notes and wrist shifting/jumping techniques. Focus on finger independence, balance, and agility. The scales at the end of each section should be played smoothly and clearly.
After training with this book, if the fingers have developed to the point where they can play octaves, students can progress to the later stage of intermediate techniques, practicing the latter half of Czerny's Op. 636 and Op. 299.
