[A century of controversy] Empress Dowager Cixi was a pivotal figure in modern Chinese history. She ruled the country behind a screen three times, controlled the late Qing government, and directly influenced the course of modern Chinese history. As a woman, she climbed to the pinnacle of power through wit and cunning in the treacherous imperial palace. As a wife and mother, she wielded immense power yet lost her husband in youth and her son in middle age, evoking sighs of sorrow. As Empress Dowager, she was meticulous and cunning, navigating the male-dominated power world, holding absolute authority. As the highest ruler of the late Qing dynasty, she not only faced the bullying of foreign powers but also dealt with the declining and precarious domestic situation. Despite her struggles, she could not reverse the tide. How extraordinary was Empress Dowager Cixi's life? How did she face the "unprecedented changes in three thousand years"? Say Cixi takes a humanistic perspective, guiding you into Empress Dowager Cixi's inner world and exploring the life behind history. In January 2007, CCTV's One Hundred Lectures program began promoting Sui Lijuan's Say Cixi, and the same-named book was released by Zhonghua Book Company in February.
