Landscape, Thought, Characters: Cao Juren's Works Series

Features: The author himself stated that the title of this book was inspired by the essay collection Thoughts on Mountains, Waters, and People by Yasukichi Hatakeyama. The works collected here are described as "texts that I have become relatively adept at writing in the past decade" (said in 1956). These "texts written with my own hands and spoken with my own voice, unrestrained by conventions," are also regarded by friends as "works that will be passed down through generations." The book is divided into three parts: The first part consists of humanistic and geographical essays. Unlike the extensive Ten Thousand Miles of Travel and Ten Thousand More Miles of Travel, Mr. Cao Juren focuses his pen on the Jiangnan region in this collection, where he is most familiar and culturally rich. From Zhejiang's eastern region to Anhui's southern region, from Jiangxi's eastern region to West Lake and Shanghai, he describes the scenery step by step, blending both the landscapes seen by scholars and the philosophical reflections and anecdotes that transform these landscapes into cultural ones. The second part discusses literary works and historical figures, who are either scholars or ordinary people, yet each description is vivid and engaging, allowing readers to appreciate the authentic life experiences that transcend different time and space contexts. The third part collects essays with a strong personal touch from Mr. Cao, ranging from reflections on daily trivialities like "getting a haircut" to profound inquiries into "fate" and "the meaning of life." These thoughts and insights are worth careful reading. Although the three parts are independent, they are interwoven in the text, blending mountains, waters, thoughts, and people into a unified whole.
