1. This book is compiled based on historical data of administrative division changes since the founding of the People's Republic of China, and references the annual "Administrative Division Abbreviated Catalogue." The establishment and abolition dates of administrative divisions are strictly based on the official approval by the Central Government and the State Council. For some counties or cities that were decided to be established but actually were not or not established on time, corrections are made according to the actual situation.
2. The writing method of this book: Taking the current administrative divisions as the scope, it provides a detailed description of the changes in administrative divisions of provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government. Provinces, prefecture-level cities, and municipalities directly under the Central Government that have been abolished are explained after the respective provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. The regions, cities, or other provincial-level administrative units that have been abolished are attached to the relevant cities or regions.
3. To help readers understand the general outline of administrative division changes since the founding of the country, the book first describes the overall trend of national provincial and regional changes before the provincial descriptions. When describing each province, it first outlines the general trend of changes in provincial-level cities, prefectures, and county-level administrative units directly under the provincial government, and then provides detailed descriptions of the distribution and regions.
4. This book only records changes in administrative divisions at or above the county level, including adjustments to the boundaries of provinces, cities, and counties. In addition to explaining the jurisdiction of central municipalities and provincial-level cities, the book does not provide information on the towns and townships under the jurisdiction of cities and counties (districts).
5. If the name of a county differs from the name of its seat of government, the seat of government is noted in parentheses. When the seat of government changes, the time and location of the relocation are explained.
6. The data in this book is up to the end of December 2002.
7. The book includes maps and a geographical name index at the end.
