The mist rising from the small river reflects the light of the streetlights, casting a dim blue glow over the wolf. It paused for a moment, as if sizing up Bosch's car, its eyes reflecting the red light, sparkling for a second, Bosch thought it might be looking at him. Then, the wolf turned and disappeared into the blue haze. Bosch's life was a mess. The Los Angeles earthquake destroyed his cliffside cabin; his girlfriend left him; he drank too much. After confronting his boss, Bosch even had to hand in his badge. Now, his future hangs on a psychological report. Bosch decided to spend his own time investigating a cold case from 1961. Over 30 years ago, a prostitute was killed in an alley and left in a trash can. The case was handled carelessly then, and the killer was never caught. More and more evidence suggests someone is trying to cover up the truth. Bosch is determined to find the killer behind it, or he can't rest, because the prostitute was his mother.
