Features: The protagonist of the novel, Father Louis de Balaguer, leaves home and goes to his uncle, who is a bishop, for education. Twelve years later, Father Louis, now a seminary student, returns to his hometown for vacation. He hears that the villagers unanimously praise the young widow Beatriz Jiménez, saying she is beautiful and virtuous, and even her elderly father is pursuing her. After meeting her, he finds that she is indeed worthy of her reputation. Gradually, he develops a fondness for her. Father Louis is torn in his heart: as a seminary student about to receive holy orders, he has long been dedicated to the religious life, and his love for God and his love for Beatriz Jiménez are irreconcilable. After a fierce struggle in his thoughts, worldly love ultimately triumphs over religious passion, and the lovers finally come together. Worldly love and the joys of life overcome asceticism and the idea of escaping the world. The theme of opposing asceticism was already raised during the Renaissance, but it still held significant practical relevance for Spain in the 19th century, as Spain, despite several social reforms, still had a powerful church influence, and religious thought still dominated people's minds.
