Features: Zhang Dai was an outstanding litterateur and historian during the transition period between the Ming and Qing dynasties. Due to the massive historical upheaval of the regime change, Zhang Dai's family, once a noble and affluent upper class, suddenly fell into poverty and hardship. Yet amidst this lack of food and clothing, Zhang Dai completed the monumental historical work Shigui Shuchu. In terms of literature, Zhang Dai's genius was primarily reflected in prose, especially in the art of short essays. Late Ming essays were a distinctive and innovative voice in the history of Chinese prose. Zhang Dai drew upon the strengths of various late Ming writers while discarding their weaknesses, blending both elegance and popular style, and combining classical and vernacular language. He maintained a rich and powerful tone without adhering to formal rules, yet his works naturally conformed to literary standards, making him the master compiler of late Ming essays. Moreover, his expertise in history allowed him to write about real events and express genuine emotions. Figures from the common folk, such as the artist Liu Jingting, the craftsman Pu Zhongqian, and the famous courtesan Wang Shengniang, were vividly portrayed in his works, described as "carved to the bone and stirring the soul," ultimately earning him the title of the "sage of short essays."
