Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was a French 19th-century positive romanticist writer. Born in France in 1803, his grandfather was the Marquis de La Banatteu, who had a relationship with a Black slave and fathered his father, Alexandre. Baptized with his mother's surname, Dumas, Alexandre Dumas achieved remarkable feats during the French Revolution and rose to become a general in the republican government. He remained a lifelong adherent of republican ideals, consistently opposing monarchy and hating restorationist and July Monarchy regimes, as well as the Second Empire. He suffered greatly from racial discrimination, leaving deep scars. His family background and experiences shaped his rebellious nature against injustice and his pursuit of justice.
Born into a military family and orphaned at a young age, Dumas lived in poverty. In his youth, he worked as a trainee in a notary's office, served as a clerk for the Duke of Orleans, participated in the July Revolution of 1830, and became a lieutenant in an artillery company. During the 1848 revolution, he led troops into Paris and edited newspapers. After Napoleon III's coup, he was forced into exile. In 1860, he went to Italy to assist Garibaldi in his military campaigns. Dumas died on December 5, 1870.
An autodidact, Dumas wrote over 300 works in various genres, primarily novels and plays. His play "Henri III and His Court" (1829) was published a year before Victor Hugo's "Hernani" and completely broke the classical "three unities." His complex life filled with adventures provided the material for his extraordinary and stories. He wrote over 100 novels, all known for their vivid and tense plots.
Dumas's novels, numbering over 100, are mostly set against real historical backgrounds, with protagonists facing extraordinary adventures. The plots are full of twists and turns, surprises at every turn, making them masterpieces of historical thrillers. His novels are characterized by extraordinary heroes, rapidly developing plots, intense fight scenes, clear and complete structures, powerful language, and dialogue.
Among his most famous works are "The Three Musketeers" (1844), previously translated as "The Three Swords" and "The Count of Monte Cristo."
