Gabriel García Márquez (1927–) was a Colombian writer and journalist. He was born in the town of Aracataca in the Magdalena Department. His father was a telegraph operator and homeopath. He grew up with his grandfather, who had once been a colonel, was kind but stubborn, and had relatively progressive thoughts; his grandmother was knowledgeable in many fields, skilled in telling myths and ghost stories, which had a significant impact on the writer's later literary creation. At the age of 13, he moved to the capital, Bogotá, and attended a church school. At 18, he enrolled in the National University of Colombia to study law and joined the Liberal Party. In 1948, Colombia experienced a civil war, and he dropped out of school midway. Soon after, he entered the press and became a journalist for the Observer, while also engaging in literary creation. From 1954, he served as the newspaper's European correspondent. From 1961, he worked as a journalist for the Cuban News Agency. From 1961 to 1967, he lived abroad in Mexico, working in literature, journalism, and film. In 1971, he received an honorary doctorate in literature from Columbia University in the United States, in 1972, the highest literary award in Latin America—the Gárgoris Award from Venezuela, and in 1982, the Nobel Prize in Literature and the title of Honorary Academician of the Colombian Language Academy. The main feature of García Márquez's works is the skillful combination of fantasy and reality, used to reflect social reality, examine life and the world. His important works include the novels One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), The Fall of the House of Lords (1975), and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985); the novellas Leaf Storm (1955), The Time of the Birds (1961), The Colonel Who Would Not Die (1961), and A Premeditated Murder (1981); the short story collections The Eyes of Blue Sapphire (1955) and The Funeral of Grandmother Grande (1962); the screenplay Kidnapping (1984); the literary dialogue Cien A?os de Soledad (1932); and the reportage collections The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor (1970) and The Adventures of Miguel Littín (1986), among others.
