Publish Date: 1992-02-01
Features: In recent years, we have often encountered readers, including undergraduate students of college English, graduate students, translation professionals, and enthusiasts of English literature. They have mentioned, almost in unison, their desire to read more new English original works, but unfortunately, such books are scarce. Those that can be found are mostly from earlier eras, making it extremely difficult to find recent literary originals. For this reason, our company decided to publish this series of books.
This series includes six short story collections and one novel, written by authors such as Saul Bellow, John Cheever, John Updike, Raymond Carver, Donald Barthelme, Ann Beattie, and William Kennedy. Some of these writers are renowned literary giants, while others are rising stars of fiction from the 1980s. They include recipients of the Nobel Prize in Literature, as well as winners of the U.S. Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. Most of their collections were once bestsellers in the United States, with some even named among the top ten outstanding works of the 1980s by authoritative publications.
This series primarily features short story collections from prominent writers who remained active in the literary scene during the 1980s. Works by authors published before this period are excluded. Some writers, though highly regarded in the U.S. literary world, did not publish short story collections in the 1980s, and thus are omitted.
Six of the books in this series were published in the 1980s, with the exception of Cheever's Short Stories. This self-selected collection was first published as a hardcover in 1978 and quickly became a rare bestseller of short fiction in the United States, winning two major literary awards—the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. By 1988, it had gone to its ninth printing. Given John Cheever's status in the U.S. literary world and his influence in Chinese literary circles, this collection is also included in the series (based on the version published by Bantam Books, a subsidiary of Random House, in March 1980).
Additionally, it should be noted that some collections in this series are too large in scope to be published all at once. For now, only works from the 1980s or close to that period have been selected.
