Features: Comics are a variety of art, and they are also illustrated and humorous critiques. There is always a message in the pictures, skillfully commenting on right and wrong, exploring the contradictions of things themselves or the inner conflicts of people. The art of comics places two demands on its creators: First, they must possess certain drawing and modeling skills. The higher their skill in depicting, the more adeptly they can express the theme and enhance the charm of the work. Second, they must have the ability to observe, analyze, and discern the surface and essence of things. Only by deeply and thoroughly understanding things can an author truly portray them, and portray them well. These two requirements determine that drawing good comics is not an easy task, and any deficiency in either aspect will inevitably be revealed in the work. It may be clumsy and tasteless, or it may lack depth, be mediocre, one-sided, or superficial.
...I have been drawing comics for 50 years, and I am fully aware of my shortcomings in the two fundamental skills of comics. I often feel inadequate when creating, sometimes unable to come up with an idea, sometimes unable to draw it out, or unable to draw it well. A good comic must be profound in thought, innovative in expression, perfect in form, and full of humor. Judging my past works by this standard, some possess one of these qualities, and some possess another, but few meet all the criteria and are truly satisfactory. When I create, I strive for clarity in logic but often neglect humor. I deeply understand that making a point clear while also making it humorous is no easy task. Regarding the form of expression, I try to avoid fixed patterns and vary it with each drawing, but due to my limited grasp of artistic techniques, the results often fall short of my imagination, leaving me with regrets.
The comic works included in this book are: Silent Response, Hearts Turn, Modern Wu Song, Universal Source, Self-Soothing, Shipwreck in the Ice Sea, Joyful Laughter, Health Wasters, Two Forms of Inaccuracy, and Modern Art, among others.
