Publish Date: 2004-03-01
Features: The main purpose of this book is to provide primary sources for the teaching and research of the history of Chinese music aesthetics. The selected materials are limited to documents with aesthetic significance, and other musical historical records are excluded. The selected materials are arranged in chronological order and divided into four parts: Pre-Qin, Han Dynasty, Wei-Jin to Sui-Tang, and Song-Yuan-Ming Dynasties. For each selected original text, a brief introduction is provided before it, followed by annotations, modern translations, and appendices, hoping to assist in understanding the original text. The appendices include relevant materials without annotations or translations, aiming to help understand the full text and its historical significance. The annotations in this book extensively draw on the research results of predecessors and contemporary scholars. All adopted materials are noted accordingly. This book was used as a teaching material for selected readings of ancient Chinese music theory and as a reference for the teaching of the history of Chinese music aesthetics at the Central Conservatory of Music. It was printed and used for three years and is now published based on the printed version with revisions.
