The Three Hundred Poems of Song (Hardcover) is based on the 1996 publication of Mr. Tang’s Annotations to The Three Hundred Poems of Song, selecting the majority of its content for translation and annotation. Each poet’s works are preceded by a brief biography of that poet. To appreciate Song poetry, one must carefully consider its key points while also grasping the overall essence. Poetry, following prose, is another literary treasure in China’s history of rhyming literature. It originated in the Five Dynasties period, flourished in the Tang Dynasty, and reached its peak in the Song Dynasty. With its unique temperament, rhythmic tones, well-structured tonal patterns, and varied sentence lengths, it became a highly distinctive lyrical poetry form suited for musical accompaniment and singing. It has long been paired with Tang poetry as a dual masterpiece, both representing the pinnacle of literary achievement of their respective eras. Numerous writers and their works from the Song Dynasty have survived to this day. Records show there are nearly 20,000 poems by over 1,300 authors. These works continue to radiate magnificent literary charm, offering people exceptional artistic enjoyment.
