Patient's question:
Recently, I don't know why I can't sleep, which greatly affects my work efficiency. My friend recommended that I go to the neurology department for a check-up. Could you please tell me what cervical spondylotic myelopathy is?Doctor's answer:
Spondylotic cervical myelopathy is a type of cervical spondylosis. It is caused by degeneration of the connecting structures between cervical vertebrae, such as disc herniation, posterior osteophytes of the vertebral body, hypertrophy of the uncovertebral joints, ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, or thickening or fibrosis of the ligamentum flavum, leading to spinal cord compression or spinal cord ischemia, which in turn results in spinal cord dysfunction. Therefore, spondylotic cervical myelopathy is one of the spinal cord compression syndromes and can cause severe disability, accounting for 10% to 15% of all cervical spondylosis cases. The basic cause of spondylotic cervical myelopathy is cervical degeneration. Among the various structures of the cervical spine, disc degeneration is believed to occur earliest."
