Features: This nine-volume Comprehensive History of Chinese Economy is an enormous systematic project. It originally belonged to the key project in the "Seventh Five-Year Plan" for national philosophy and social sciences, with the research topic name "Research on the Periodization of Ancient Chinese Economic History." Renowned historians from the Institute of History and the Institute of Economics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, as well as from Capital Normal University, Hebei University, Zhengzhou University, and Shandong University, served as chief editors for each volume, organizing scholars from various institutions to participate. They devoted their utmost efforts and painstakingly worked on it for over a decade. Some of the volumes were published in advance and gained acclaim both at home and abroad. Now, all nine volumes have been completed, and at the request of Economic Daily Press, they are being published together. While retaining the names of each volume, the entire work is uniformly titled Comprehensive History of Chinese Economy. This is truly a cause for celebration in the field of Chinese historical studies. I was commissioned to write this preface and feel honored. First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the chief editors and authors of each volume. Then, I will briefly share some insights on a few related issues. This book is divided into nine volumes: Pre-Qin, Qin and Han, Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui and Five Dynasties, Song, Liao, Western Xia, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing. Starting from the Shang Dynasty, which has the earliest written records, it spans over thirty centuries. It is a comprehensive history of the Chinese economy, connecting past and present. Today, we still need such a comprehensive history. Economic history focuses on the process of development, rather than emphasizing events like political or military history. From the perspective of writing style, it is appropriate to examine the evolution of the environment, society, and economy over long, medium, and short periods.
