Features: Cambridge International English is a comprehensive English course specifically designed for learners from non-English-speaking countries. The course covers four skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—while also providing pronunciation training and vocabulary expansion, with a particular emphasis on developing listening and speaking skills. The primary goal of this book is to cultivate English communicative competence, i.e., the ability to flexibly use English based on communicative contexts, purposes, and audiences. The book primarily uses American English, but its content is not limited to any single country, region, or culture; instead, it reflects the richness and diversity of English as an international language of communication. This course is divided into four levels:
1. Beginner Level: Targeted at true beginners with no prior English foundation, this level introduces basic grammar structures, vocabulary, and language functions.
2. Level 1: Aimed at learners with a beginner-level English proficiency, this level further develops grammatical, lexical, and pragmatic skills to bring learners to an intermediate-low level.
3. Level 2: Designed for learners with intermediate-low English proficiency, this level further refines grammatical, lexical, and pragmatic skills to elevate learners to an intermediate level.
4. Level 3: Aimed at learners with an intermediate English proficiency, this level focuses on cultivating the ability to communicate fluently and accurately in English.
Through numerous thought-provoking and challenging exercises, the course helps students further strengthen and develop their communicative abilities in English. In addition to applied skill exercises, the textbook also incorporates advanced text-comprehension activities. Listening exercises include: listening to narratives, listening to advertisements, listening to discussions, and listening to interviews. Reading activities feature authentic passages on topics such as cross-cultural communication, lifestyles, and diverse values.
