What are the symptoms of Guillain-Barré syndrome?

Patient's question:

I am preparing to have a baby and I'm very afraid that the child might have a congenital disease. I don't know what the symptoms of Guillain-Barré syndrome are like?

Doctor's answer:

Guillain-Barré syndrome manifests as limb weakness, with flaccid paralysis being the most prominent symptom of the disease. It typically begins in the lower limbs and gradually spreads to the trunk, upper limbs, and cranial nerves, accompanied by hypotonia. In the initial or recovery phase, excessive sweating is common, with a strong odor of sweat, which results from sympathetic nerve stimulation. A very small number of patients may experience temporary urinary retention in the early stages due to temporary endocrine imbalance in bladder control or damage to the spinal nerves controlling the external sphincter. Constipation is common, and some patients may also experience symptoms such as unstable blood pressure and tachycardia.
