Do you need to check for hemolysis if you are pregnant?

Patient's question:

I have been experiencing dizziness recently and haven't been able to eat properly, with poor mental state. The hospital check-up revealed a blood-related issue. Is it necessary to test for hemolysis if I am pregnant?

Doctor's answer:

If a woman becomes pregnant and experiences hemolysis again, it may lead to early miscarriage, intrauterine fetal death, fetal growth retardation, or abnormal conditions such as hemolytic jaundice after birth. Hemolysis primarily occurs when the woman is type O blood and the man is type AB blood or type B blood, or when the woman is type A blood. This is because the blood type mismatch between mother and child causes hemolysis. If the woman is not type O blood, hemolysis generally will not occur again, and there is no need to perform hemolysis testing.
