Does not having proteinuria mean kidney failure?

Patient's question:

Recently, my appetite has been poor, and I've been experiencing some swelling in my body. I feel completely exhausted. When I went to the hospital for a check-up, they said it was kidney disease. I'm wondering if it's kidney failure if there's no protein in the urine?

Doctor's answer:

I'm happy to assist you. Based on the issue you've provided, a thorough kidney examination revealed no proteinuria, which is normal and not indicative of kidney failure. In a normal urinalysis, if proteinuria is present, it suggests kidney damage, conditions like nephritis or nephrotic syndrome, and requires prompt and detailed kidney function tests, such as ultrasound, to identify the cause. Your current condition is normal. Drinking plenty of water, engaging in regular exercise, and avoiding colds and (flu) are recommended.
