How to evaluate newborn jaundice?

Patient's question:

In less than three checks, the jaundice value of the baby in my sister's house is 14, hospitalized for blue light treatment. Today, eight days after birth, she has been exposed to blue light four times, and it keeps reverting. Today it's up to 115. How is newborn jaundice detected?

Doctor's answer:

First, visually observe; second, measure bilirubin through the skin. The gold standard is to check serum bilirubin levels through blood draw. "Return" does not mean complete disappearance, but rather reducing to a safe range. Treatment is only required when levels exceed the standard. The main treatment methods include phototherapy, exchange transfusion, and drug therapy for control. Exchange transfusion is used for severe jaundice cases where phototherapy fails. Drug therapy takes longer to show effects and is commonly used for babies over two weeks old.
