Patient's question:
Recently, my appetite hasn't been good, and I've been a bit swollen. I feel weak all over. When I went to the hospital for a check-up, they said it was kidney disease. Is it serious if there are stones in a kidney cyst?Doctor's answer:
First, kidney cysts and kidney stones are two different conditions. What you likely mean is that this person has a kidney cyst and also kidney stones. Kidney cysts generally do not require special treatment. However, when a kidney cyst is very large—typically less than five centimeters—or when there is local discomfort or pain, surgery may be considered for treatment. The treatment of kidney stones is even more complex. Small stones can often be managed by simply changing daily habits, such as increasing fluid intake and exercise, to help the stones pass. For slightly larger stones that cannot pass on their own, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) may be considered. If the stones are very large, surgery may be necessary.
Additionally, regular follow-up examinations are required, including ultrasound and kidney function tests.
