Publishing Date: 2007-01-01
Features:
1. This compilation supplements the Complete Ming Ci, following the editorial conventions of the Complete Ming Ci.
2. All works by Ming Dynasty poets not included in the Complete Ming Ci, as well as previously included works by poets that are now missing, are included in this compilation.
3. For poets not covered in the Complete Ming Ci, brief biographical sketches are provided, summarizing their courtesy names, place of origin, birth and death years, official career, and writings. Where details are unclear, they are omitted. For poets already included in the Complete Ming Ci, no biographical sketches are written; instead, the notation "See Complete Ming Ci (Volume X, Page Y)" is added, along with the birth and death years or the year of imperial examination success from the Complete Ming Ci's biographical sketch. If the birth and death years in the sketch are missing or incorrect but verifiable, they are corrected for proper chronological arrangement.
4. This compilation is arranged chronologically by the birth years of the poets. Those with unknown birth years are treated based on their death years, imperial examination records, and social connections. Poets already included or not included in the Complete Ming Ci are arranged uniformly.
5. For poets active during the transition between dynasties, this compilation largely follows the conventions of the Complete Ming Ci with minor adjustments to align as closely as possible with the Complete Jin-Yuan Ci and the Complete Qing Ci (Shun). Poets from the Yuan Dynasty who wrote during the Ming Dynasty, regardless of whether they served the Ming, are included. Poets from the Ming Dynasty who later served the Qing Dynasty are treated as follows:
(a) For poets included in both the Complete Ming Ci and the Complete Qing Ci, the biographical sketch notes "See Complete Ming Ci (Volume X, Page Y), also see Complete Qing Ci (Shun, Volume X, Page Y)." Generally, only works not included in both compilations (i.e., those in the Complete Ming Ci but not the Complete Qing Ci) are included. Exceptions are rare and require annotation. If the Complete Qing Ci cites a selected collection, and the author has a separate collection, this compilation includes the work from the separate collection to maintain completeness, noting "See Complete Qing Ci."
(b) For poets included in the Complete Qing Ci but not the Complete Ming Ci, they are generally not included unless there is a compelling reason, in which case an annotation is provided.
(c) For poets who died during the Shunzhi era and were briefly appointed to office after entering the Qing court but were omitted from the Complete Qing Ci, they are included on a case-by-case basis.
6. The arrangement of each poet's works follows the original order in the source text without adjustment, and the source is noted. Works collected outside of the author's separate collections are placed after their existing works from separate collections, with the source noted. Works of uncertain attribution are marked as "Suspected Works" and included at the end of the author's entries.
7. For works included in the Complete Ming Ci based on song anthologies, discussions of ci poetry, local gazetteers, etc., this compilation reincludes them if they are incomplete (e.g., the upper and lower halves of a ci are split into two separate poems) or contain significant variants, with annotations explaining the changes.
8. Following the conventions of the Complete Ming Ci, this compilation uses the ci form as the main title, the meaning-based title as a subtitle following the main title, and the preface as a separate line below the main title.
9. For works classified as "," lengthy prefaces are omitted, and only the ci poems are included, though the titles "" or "" are retained to indicate their nature. If the title lacks such classifications, an annotation is provided.
10. For multiple consecutive works of the same form from the same section, the second and subsequent works are marked with "X" (e.g., "," ""). For multiple consecutive works of the same title but different forms, the second and subsequent works are marked with "."
11. The main text of the ci follows the conventions of Ci Pu and Ci Lu for line breaks. Where these conventions do not apply, line breaks are determined based on the meaning of the text. For anonymous or self-composed ci, line breaks and stanza divisions are based on the meaning.
12. Punctuation follows the conventions of the Complete Ming Ci.
13. The collation focuses on identifying errors, with careful corrections made for omissions, inversions, or missing passages, accompanied by annotations. Obvious errors are corrected directly. If the source text is damaged or unclear, corrections are made using different copies of the same version without annotation. If corrections are made using different versions, an annotation is provided.
14. To preserve the original form of the works, variant characters in the main text are generally left unchanged. In the titles of ci forms, variant characters are converted to standard traditional characters to ensure consistency in the table of contents.
15. To maintain uniformity in style, the place of origin for poets active at the end of the Yuan and beginning of the Ming dynasties is based on Ming administrative divisions after the first year of the Yongle era, classifying them under the two Zhili provinces and the thirteen Circuit Intendants' Offices.
16. For ease of reference, a "Bibliography of Sources" and an "Author Index" are appended to the main text.
