What is a hernia? What are the symptoms?

Patient's question:

Recently, I've been having stomach pain. I've visited many hospitals, some said it's a hernia, others said it's lymphatic blockage. Could you please tell me what a hernia is and what symptoms it has?

Doctor's answer:

Hernia refers to a condition where an organ or tissue in the human body protrudes through a weak point in the body into another area. Clinically, inguinal hernia is relatively common, primarily presenting as a lump in the groin area, which can usually return to its normal position after lying down. For children under one year old, surgery can be temporarily avoided, and a hernia belt can be used to press on the deep ring, with a certain possibility of spontaneous complete recovery. For hernias in adults, or when the hernia size decreases and symptoms subside, or when re-occurrence of incarceration or strangulation occurs, there is a risk of intestinal necrosis and life-threatening injury, and surgery should be performed as early as possible. Currently, laparoscopic surgery is commonly used, which causes less mental trauma and promotes faster recovery.
