What are the symptoms of the first stage of lymphatic filariasis?

Patient's question:

Some of my friends have infectious diseases, I'm afraid of getting infected, but I'm too embarrassed to ask others. I want to go to the hospital for a check-up, but I'm also afraid. Could you please tell me what are the symptoms of the first stage of lymphatic filariasis?

Doctor's answer:

During the acute phase of lymphatic filariasis, lymphadenitis often occurs, and lymphangitis may also be present. Patients may experience intermittent recurrent episodes, with some recurring monthly, while others may have recurrences as infrequent as once every few months. Recurrences can manifest with symptoms such as chills, fever, and even generalized fatigue. Physical examination may reveal lymphadenitis or lymphangitis. In some cases, the condition may resolve on its own within 3 to 5 days. However, if secondary infection occurs, it may lead to the formation of lymphangitis abscesses. Thank you.
